Walter Pete Smick, 77, passed away on May 1st, 2026 in Vancouver, WA. He was born to Peter and Amy Smick on March 17th in Vancouver, WA.

Walter, known to family and friends as Butch or Wally, grew up in Moulton Falls, WA. He spent his childhood playing with his twin sister, Linda, and older sister, Pat in the woods and swimming in the nearby river. He was an excellent swimmer and enjoyed water skiing and playing basketball.

From an early age, Walter was devoted to the Lord Christ and faithfully served the church in any way he could. He was devoted to the WORD and spent hours each day in the Bible, reading, studying, and memorizing verses. He was an active member of Brush Prairie Baptist Church and was a great example of a faithful servant. His favorite part of church life was teaching Sunday School and participating in the Men’s Bible Study.

On August 16th, 1980, he married Rosie Ueltschi. They started their life together and had their son, Gherid Smick on July 1st, 1982. Both of them devoted themselves to Brush Prairie Baptist Church and faithfully served the church as Sunday School teachers, Choir, and helping the church out with various events. He graduated from Portland University with a Bachelors in Education with a specialization in history.

Walter spent many years as a Highway Maintenance Technician for WA State. He also served as an instructor for the Safety Traffic Control and was the President of his Union for many years. After retiring, he enjoyed working in the garden, watching Blazer and Seahawks games, telling corny dad jokes, mentoring others, and spending time with family and friends. He was an avid reader and a lover of history and biblical philosophy. He had an open-door policy and welcomed anyone who came in and made sure that they left with food leftovers and a smile on their face.

Walter is survived by his wife Rosie of Vancouver, WA. His son, Gherid Smick and Daughter-In-Law, Rikki Smick of Kelso, WA; twin sister Linda Byers and nephew Mark Byers of Battle Ground, WA; his nephew and wife, Matt and Sarah Byers and their three boys (Blake, Logan, and Ryan) of Woodland, WA; and many nieces and nephews, Christian friends, neighbors, and high school friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Amy Smick, father Peter Smick, and sister Pat McIntosh.
