Battle Ground

Darlene Laverne (Nichols) Campbell, 87, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11th, 2025. Darlene had battled dementia for the last several years of her life and resided in a memory care facility in Battle Ground, WA, close to her youngest daughter, Jennifer.

Most of Darlene's childhood was spent moving all over the U.S., with her father working and supervising the construction of many hydroelectric dams, back in the day. After high school, Darlene relocated to Goldendale, WA, with her parents, where she would live for 50 years.

In 1975, ,Darlene mat George Campbell and the two wed on March 19th, 1977. They loved to go on the trips together and shared a love for camping, bowling and time with friends. But after a terrible car/truck accident took George's life in 1982 and left Darlene in the hospital fighting for her own, she decided to press on and continue with their adoption journey. Darlene adopted both her daughters over the next few years and they were her pride and joy.

She cherished time spent with family dearly. In the early days, Darlene took the girls on road trips to Yellowstone, Montana, and Wyoming to see extended family, driving a huge RV all by herself. Frequent family trips to the Oregon Coast also held special memories for her. She had a huge heart for animals, whether that be the dogs and cats she had, or the skunks and deer she feed outside. She also loved her close friends and socializing with them at breakfast or with house visits. However, it was her faith that was central and grounding in life. Darlene was a founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Goldendale, along with her parents. she instilled a love of Jesus and a strong foundation of faith in her daughters as well.

Darlene is survived by her daughters Rebecca (Daniel) Kuehner and Jennifer Lucas; grandchildren Eli Kuehner, Emmy Kuehner, Matthew Kuehner, and Ava Lucas. She was preceded in death by her husband George Campbell, her sister and brother-in-law Judith and John Mowery, as well her her parents Laverne "Nick" and Thelma Nichols.

A celebration of life will be planned later this summer at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale, WA.
